Residential
Closed cell Sprayed Polyurethane Foam (ccSPF) is the perfect insulating material for residential construction. It has the highest R-value (R-6.5 per inch) of any of the commonly used insulation materials, double that of fiberglass. It encloses the home in a continuous envelope which prevents air and moisture intrusion. The newest building science technology demonstrates the benefits of a conditioned attic, especially when the heating and air conditioning ductwork is enclosed within the envelope.
The ?Honeywell Report, Residential Insulation Case Studies,? has demonstrated that homeowners with SPF insulation can save 38 to 48 percent in utility bills, with savings as high as 58 percent for homeowners with propane heating. One case study, for example, was of a homeowner who assumed an additional $58 in his monthly mortgage payment to finance SPF insulation. However, he saved $108 on his monthly heating and cooling bills. This would lead to savings of $18,000.00 over the life of a 30 year mortgage, assuming no change in the cost of energy.
Some of the other beneficial aspects of ccSPF are:
1) Often times, due to the efficiency of spray foam, a smaller HVAC system can be used. When this is coupled with an air exchanger there is additional energy savings and the air quality in the home is greatly increased. Dust is reduced and there is none of the microscopic fiberglass fibers usually found in homes insulated with fiberglass. In addition, outdoor pollutants are greatly reduced.
2) Because ccSPF does not absorb any moisture and provides an air tight thermal and moisture barrier it prevents mold growth.
3) Mice and rats love to burrow and nest in blown cellulose and fiberglass. Rodents, including termites, cannot use ccSPF to nest in or feed on.
4) Unlike most other types of insulation, ccSPF will not settle so the R-value remains constant for the lifetime of the material.
5) ccSPF insulation provides a superior sound barrier to minimize outside noise within the home.
6) ccSPF improves the structural strength of the home. In hurricane areas homeowners are given reduced insurance rates if they insulate with ccSPF. It is also noted by FEMA as the only insulation material that is impervious to flood waters.
